Building permit totals from the first six months of 2017 indicate Steinbach is on track to surpass 2016’s year-end total, as multi-family dwellings continue to drive growth in the city while single family housing starts remain strong.

From January through June this year, the City of Steinbach issued permits valued at a total of $29.3 million—about $4 million more than totals seen through the same period last year, and just $10 million shy of 2016’s year-end total of $39.3 million.

While 50 dwelling units were added in 2016, 110 dwelling units have been added so far in 2017, demonstrating the higher number of multi-family dwellings going up in neighbourhoods throughout the city. A 24-unit apartment block on Hanover Street is one of the latest projects to get underway, carrying an estimated project value of $3.1 million.

The city’s numbers also indicate June was a busy month for new buildings and renovations. Last month’s permit figures comprised nearly 30 percent of the year-to-date total, clocking in at $8.4 million and 37 dwelling units in the last month alone.
