Another step towards expanding the sale of retail cannabis sales in Manitoba is complete, as the province has announced the results of the second phase of its cannabis retailer selection process.

Retailers for seven Manitoba communities, including Niverville, were selected through a random draw on Wednesday.

Canna Cabana Inc. was named as the successful retailer for Niverville. Red River Co-op has been awarded a standby position. Chosen retailers have 10 days to confirm their interest, after which the opportunity with be presented to the standby retailer.

The province said in a release that once confirmed, retailers will enter into written agreements with the province and can then begin the process to open their stores including securing the necessary permits from the communities in which they will operate and receiving a licence from the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority.

Mayor Myron Dyck said last week that Niverville’s industrial park and Bronstone Drive have both been identified by the town as store locations which would comply with provincial rules that restrict where cannabis retail stores are permitted.

Retailers were also selected for Altona, Flin Flon, Lac du Bonnet, the RM of Russell-Binscarth, Swan River and Virden.
