An announcement by Bell MTS left municipal leaders in region’s most southern municipalities very pleased on Monday afternoon, as the telecommunications company made good on promises by its predecessor MTS to expand cellular coverage in the region.

Cellular coverage is being expanded to Stuartburn, Woodridge and Zhoda. Service in Woodridge will be available already this week, while service is expected to be launched in Stuartburn and Zhoda next year.

Reeves Wayne Anderson of Piney and Jim Swidersky of Stuartburn, both on hand for the announcement made in La Broquerie, agreed that the increased coverage will go a long way to ensure the population centres and highways in their respective municipalities will now have cell phone service.

Swidersky reflected on the work done at the local level since 2011, when wildfires threatened the region and showed firsthand how cellular phone service improvements were needed as a matter of public safety.

That prompted Stuartburn, Piney and Emerson-Franklin to band together to fund a $15,000 study to help make the case for improved cell phone service in the Southeast.

“What greater power to have than another form of communication. Today’s announcement is great. Another powerful tool in our back pocket,” Swidersky said.
