The new president of the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce says that in his time as president he wants to see the Chamber continue to grow and bring business leaders together in the community.

“We want to see businesses who care about the community, and care about their neighbours and fellow businesses,” newly elected Steinbach Chamber of Commerce president Tim Schmitt said. “If we do that we will have a better overall community as a result.”

Schmitt who has owned Steinbach-based Oakleaf Promotions since 2012 has been elected to serve a two-year term as Chamber president after being voted into the role earlier this month.

Schmitt, who held the role of chamber vice-president since 2015, will take over the role of president from HyLife’s Cameron Bergen.

Schmitt said since he joined the chamber in 2012 they have seen major growth in their membership, and he hopes to keep growing those numbers and continue bringing more businesses into the chamber.

“We’ve had significant growth and that means that businesses care to be part of the chamber of commerce, but also be part of the greater community,” Schmitt said.

“It’s about creating a community, and it’s about businesses knowing about one another and caring about one another and connecting, so if businesses are interested in being a part of that it’s exciting for us, because that means we have a business community that cares about each other.”

In his time as president Schmitt also wants to see local businesses continue to support local non-profits and charities. “It’s about connecting the for-profit with the non-profit and striking a balance, and if we do that we will have a well-balanced community,” Schmitt said.

“Those non-profits play an important piece in making the community successful.”

Along with the voting in Schmitt as president, the chamber will also see Wayne Patram from Barkman Concrete take over as vice president, after serving as the chair of the business development committee for the past two years.

Dwayne Doroshuk has accepted another term as treasurer of the Chamber.
