A Steinbach woman is asking residents to drop off donations that will be donated to two local charities as a way to help those in need, while also honouring the memory of her son.

Lisa Boyd of Steinbach lost her son 16-year-old Tyler Klassen on Oct. 26, 2016, four days after the teen was involved in a motor vehicle accident.

Boyd said that her son will soon have been gone for a total of 730 days, and to honour his memory and the time he has been gone she hopes to collect 730 items that will then be split between Steinbach Community Outreach and South East Helping Hands.

Boyd added her son was someone who was always generous and caring with his friends and family, and that is why she thinks this is a perfect fundraiser to honour him.

“I was told a few stories about how he would only have a few dollars in his pocket and him and a friend both wouldn’t have a lunch, but he would give his money to a friend and go without. That’s just the kind of guy he was.”

Donations of non-perishable food items, toiletries and other items are now being collected in Steinbach at bins that sit at both 126 Reimer Ave. and 26 Whitby Cres.

Boyd is also hoping that those who donate will consider donating toiletries because those are items that are always needed by both organizations, but often not donated as much as items such as food.

“Anything people want to donate is amazing, but I am calling out for those things because that’s something we haven’t seen as much of,” she said.

Donations are being accepted until Oct. 22.
