RM of Hanover Fire Chief Paul Wiebe said losses are undetermined after a chicken barn went up in flames early Sunday morning, southwest of Blumenort on Road 31E.

Wiebe said the structure fire was reported at about 3:40 a.m.

“When crews got here, we had a chicken barn that was fully involved,” he said.

Wiebe said fire crews were able to knock the fire down in the property’s south barn, leaving the north barn intact.

Their efforts meant birds in the north barn were saved, but the south barn was a total loss.

“There were a significant amount of birds, we don’t have the exact number yet. Unfortunately the birds in the barn are all lost,” Wiebe said.

A barn of this type could typically hold 40,000 to 50,000 birds, he said.

He said he expected fire crews to be on the scene until at least noon on Sunday, as work continued to target hot spots.
