The Mennonite Heritage Village hopes to get local families outdoors and enjoying the winter this upcoming long weekend.
The museum’s second annual winter carnival will take place this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Horse-drawn sleigh rides, skating and sledding, a series of competitions including a tug of war, smoosh races, and other indoor activities and competitions will all be part of the event.
Development coordinator Patricia West said the idea for the event came after MHV noticed that Steinbach lacked a big outdoor event in the winter.
“We have noticed many surrounding communities seem to have winter carnivals, but there didn’t seem to be anything in Steinbach,” she said. “So we have added one to not only have some community fun but to also keep engagement with the museum throughout the winter months.”
Keeping active year-round is a good thing for everyone, she said.
“These types of events definitely help to curb the cabin fever.”
Admission rates for Saturday’s carnival will be the same as the museum’s regular daily rates ($6 for adults, $5 for seniors age 65 and older, $5 for students age 13 to 22, $3 for children age 6 to 12, free admission for ages 5 and under).
