After a nine-month test drive in the mayor’s chair, Ritchot’s Chris Ewen has announced he will take a run at a full four-year term.

Ewen told The Carillon he filed his candidacy paperwork Wednesday.

“I’ve had a great nine months so far,” he said. “I want to show the people that there’s a lot more for us as council to do, especially a lot more for me that I can give to all the communities of Ritchot.”

Ewen’s declaration makes him the first mayoral candidate out of the gate ahead of municipal and school board general elections on Oct. 24.

Ewen, a 30-year-old bistro owner turned rookie politician who triumphed in a byelection last July, said he will continue to emphasize main street revitalizations, respect around the council table, and communication with ratepayers when he begins knocking on doors.

He was unsure whether the fall race will have a different feel than the surprise byelection, when he ran against three opponents, including former mayor Jackie Hunt.

“I’ve just never known anything else,” he said.
