Fire damage estimated at $2.5 million

An investigation into a fire at a chicken barn southwest of Blumenort on Sunday has been unable to identify a cause of the blaze.

A spokesperson for the Office of the Fire Commissioner said yesterday afternoon that due to extensive damage and the heat of the fire the cause was unable to be determined, but that the fire was not considered suspicious.

Damage is estimated at $2.5 million.

About 28,000 chickens were lost in the fire. Another 20,000 were saved after firefighters prevented the spread of the fire to an adjacent barn.
