Giving challenge stretches dollars

Anyone that makes a donation to the Steinbach Community Foundation (SCF) this Saturday will see that donation go a very long way towards helping SCF do the work they do to help local organizations who do good work in the local community.

The Endow Manitoba 24-Hour Giving Challenge takes place all day this Saturday, and for every donation of five dollars to any community foundation in Manitoba including SCF, the Winnipeg Foundation will add another dollar to that donation, while the province will also donate an additional dollar.

SCF board chair Patti Fries said those considering donating money to charitable organizations at this time of year should consider donating to SCF this Saturday because those dollars will be stretched during the 24-Hour-Giving Challenge.

“We will receive an additional two dollars for every five dollars, so for example if we get a $100 donation we are looking at an additional $40,” Fries said.

“When someone can give five dollars and then see that that stretched into another two dollars that is really significant, so it’s realty the best time to donate.”

Fries also said that as we move towards the Christmas season many local residents are looking to donate to charitable organizations, but don’t always know who or what to support.

She said SCF through handing out grants once a year helps a large number of non-profit organizations in the Steinbach area, and often gives grants out based on need, so anyone who donates can be sure their money will be put to good use.

“We are trying to help those groups that work to benefit the community,” Fries said.

“And we can give the money when the needs come up. If a groups is in need they are going to come forward, and we are going to give it to a group that really needs it.”

The SCF mandate includes working to help non-profit organizations that work in the area of health, social services, education and arts and culture, and the organization gave out approximately $20,000 in grant money last year.

All donations made for the Endow Manitoba 24-Hour Giving Challenge can be made by going to endowmanitoba.ca on Saturday Nov. 18, clicking on Find my Foundation, and then clicking on Steinbach Community Foundation to make a donation.
