Less than a week after Emerson MLA Cliff Graydon apologized for inappropriate behavior and announced he would not seek reelection in 2020, his Progressive Conservative colleagues have expelled him from caucus.

The party issued a statement on Monday that the Emerson MLA had been expelled effective immediately.

“While we do not take this decision lightly, it has become apparent that previous attempts with Mr. Graydon to address a pattern of inappropriate behaviour have not succeeded,” said PC caucus chair Wayne Ewasko in the statement.

“We have acted fairly, swiftly and respectfully in dealing with this difficult matter while ensuring all policies and procedures were followed and that the privacy and confidentiality of all parties involved were respected.”

He said the party’s goal remains, “that the Legislature is a safe and respectful workplace that fosters a listening culture where individuals are comfortable in raising concerns so that we can ensure a safe and respectful workplace for all.”

Graydon also said in a statement last Wednesday that he was taking an immediate medical leave from his duties. His announcement came after he found himself at the centre of controversy, following reports in the Winnipeg Free Press of two separate comments made to female staff members at the Manitoba Legislature.

In one instance, the newspaper reported Graydon invited a woman to sit on his lap at a meeting. In another incident, the Emerson MLA asked another staffer to lick food off his face.

Graydon has served as the MLA for Emerson since 2007.
