The RM of Hanover has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Hanover Ag Society as the municipality hopes that one day they will be able to build a brand new multiplex on the Hanover Ag Grounds.

Hanover has been working on plans as they hope to build a brand new arena/multiplex facility in or near the town of Grunthal.

“The old arena in Grunthal has reached the point where it’s at the end of its life cycle,” Hanover recreation manager Lisa Baldwin said. “Structurally it’s sound, but it’s no longer ideal in terms of being an arena.”

Baldwin said the municipality has appointed a Grunthal Multiplex Steering Committee and that committee has now identified The Hanover Ag Society’s property at 153 Southwood Street in Grunthal as the best location for a new facility.

“We did a site selection matrix and we identified a couple of locations,” Baldwin said. “We went through and it was identified that the Hanover Ag grounds was the most ideal location for construction.

“Any other location we looked at would be very, very expensive to bring services to, as well as the site is central, so we took all that into consideration and Hanover Ag did come out on top.”

Baldwin added the planning is still very early stages, so the agreement simply puts into writing that if funding is secured to build a multiplex, the municipality and the Hanover Ag Society will work together and enter into land acquisition negotiations.

She said Hanover will now work to create a conceptual design and start a capital campaign for the project, and she said the “ballpark” figure for what the facility could cost currently sits at around $11 million.
