The newly anointed executive director of Festival du Voyageur says he is excited to take on the new role, not only because it’s a major step in his career, but also because he can now work to spread Francophone culture and heritage throughout Manitoba.

“I’m very excited to become an executive director for the first time and to reach the next step of my career,” 31-year-old Darrel Nadeau said. “And I’m very excited to lead a dedicated team, and I’m excited about the work that they do.

“Their mandate is to spread Francophone culture year-round, and that is very exciting.”

Nadeau, who was born and raised in a French-speaking family on a dairy farm in La Broquerie, was recently named as the brand new executive director of Festival du Voyageur.

He said he still has close ties to the community where he was born and raised, and many from the community have been reaching out to offer him their congratulations, and to wish him luck in his new role.

“The response has been tremendous in terms of folks from La Broquerie letting me know they are proud that someone from the community will be running the Festival, so it’s been very heartwarming,” Nadeau said.

Nadeau said his strong Francophone roots combined with his abilities and education led him to apply and ultimately be offered the role with Festival du Voyageur.

“It came up as an opportunity as something that fit my background and fit where I’m going with my career,” he said.

Nadeau has a master’s degree in business administration, is a certified management accountant, and has spent the last six years working as a manager in finance and administration for a charitable organization.

He also is someone who has spent a lot of his time every February attending Festival du Voyageur.

“I attended Festival for a number of years as a child, through school and family, and now I go as an adult taking my nieces and nephews, so it’s been fun to recreate those memories,” he said.

Nadeau added that in the role he will work not only at making the annual Festival du Voyageur a success, but also to expand what the Festival offers in the community year-round.

“I want to work to expand those activates and programming so this is something that is really celebrated all year,” Nadeau said.

Nadeau will officially take over the role of executive director of Festival du Voyageur on Oct. 23, taking over for outgoing executive director Ginette Lavack Walters.

Festival du Voyageur runs every February in Winnipeg and is the largest winter festival in western Canada.
