An actor who honed his skills in Steinbach has taken on a major role and will be on stage in Winnipeg all this week.

Justin Fry, 28, is currently one of two actors putting on Theatre Projects Manitoba’s production of Mary’s Wedding at the Rachel Brown Theatre in downtown Winnipeg.

Fry currently lives in Winnipeg, but said it was during his time living in Steinbach and taking drama classes at SRSS that he fell in love with acting.

“I got interested in acting when I was young and stopped for a while as I got more into sports,” Fry said. “But in my last year of high school I decided that I wanted to act again, so I signed up for the drama class that year and just fell in love with it right away.”

Fry continued acting after graduating from SRSS, and recently auditioned for and was given the role of Charlie in Mary’s Wedding, a production he said is both a love story and a way story.

“It’s a play that revolves around a young couple during the time of the First World War,” Fry said. “The play centres around a young woman named Mary who meets her first love who is named Charlie while living on the Canadian prairies.”

Actress Sarah Flynn plays the role of Mary in the production, and Fry and Flynn make up the entire cast for the show.

“It’s just us on the stage the whole time,” Fry said. “It’s a big role.”

Fry said the play moves back and forth between the love story in Canada and Charlie’s experiences overseas in the war, and he thinks it’s a timely production with Canada recently commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

“It’s a big honour to be playing a role like this especially at this time of year,” Fry said.

He added the show hits on many themes and brings out many emotions in audiences.

“It’s funny and it’s sad and it goes through so many emotions,” Fry said. “It is talking about war so there are some parts that are pretty intense, but it’s also a love story and a romantic story.”

Mary’s Wedding will continue its run until Sunday at the Rachel Brown Theatre in Winnipeg.
