The St Malo and District Wildlife Association says its well-known statue that was hauled away and put in storage in 2015 will soon be brought back out to once again stand in the community of St Malo.

The RM of De Salaberry has officially purchased the former Esso property, often referred to as Parc Esso in St Malo, after working to acquire the property for more than a year.

St Malo and District Wildlife Association treasurer Bruno Hebert said part of the plan for the property will be to resurrect St Malo’s famous deer statue, which was removed about two years ago from the spot where it originally stood, when condominiums were built on that property.

“Right now the statue is included in the design,” Hebert said.

Hebert said the statue had stood in the community for approximately 25 years before being removed. He said the RM is now saving a spot for it on the property they recently purchased.

“The RM and the L.U.D of St Malo and the people of St Malo all want it back, so that’s why the RM stepped up to the plate to purchase that land and give us a place to set up the deer statues,” Hebert said.

“We always hoped that one day the statues would be back up in the community.”

In a press release, the municipality said a number of plans exist for the site including space for food trucks, vendors and rest rooms.

Hebert said the municipality does not yet have a firm timeline on how the project will move forward, but he added they now expect the statues to be up on the property by late summer or early fall of next year.
