A major addition and renovation is coming to Mitchell Elementary School, the province announced Monday.

The announcement, made by Education Minister Kelvin Goertzen during a Monday morning assembly at the school was met with a rousing round of applause from school staff and students.

In a press release the province said the addition and renovation project will include five new classrooms, a new library, a new multipurpose room and related ancillary spaces.

DAVE BAXTER | THE CARILLON Hanover School Division Randy Dueck, in the Mitchell Elementary School gym on Monday morning, welcomes a provincial announcement of a major addition and renovation project that will see 12,600 sq-ft. of new space added to the school and 2,000 sq-ft. of existing space renovated.

The project will add 12,600 sq-ft. of new space to the school, while also renovating 2,000 sq-ft. of existing space.

“Our priority is to catch up with the needs of growing areas of the province and this expansion is much-needed in Mitchell, where we’ve seen enrolment on the rise for the past 20 years,” Goertzen said in the release.

“The school ran out of space and had to create learning environments in the library and hallways as a result. These students deserve a proper place to learn.”

According to the province, enrolment at the kindergarten to grade four school has increased at a steady pace in recent years due to immigration and robust housing development in the community, growing by 95 students between 2012 and 2018.

The current enrolment of 450 students has led to overcrowding, and the province said enrolment is expected to grow to 600 students by 2028.

“We’re very pleased with this announcement, as we have seen consistent yearly student growth over many years and available school space has been stretched beyond capacity,” Hanover School Division board chair Ron Falk said in the release.

“This addition will enable the school to provide an improved learning environment for many students, and we thank the Manitoba government for recognizing this need and providing the funds for this project.”

The province said they now plan to hire a prime consultant by 2019 and the project is expected to go to tender and start construction in the late summer of 2019, with an expected completion date of December of 2020.

Construction costs for the project are estimated to be in excess of $4.2 million, the province said.
