A 26-year-old man now has a pair of indecent act convictions to his name, after being sentenced in Steinbach court on Thursday.

Dale Reinke pleaded guilty to the charges in March, which stemmed from his arrest following incidents of public masturbation in Steinbach last fall. Steinbach RCMP received reports on Oct. 1 of a male committing an indecent act while sitting on a bench in L.A. Barkman Park, where children played nearby. A further report was made on Oct. 2 of another incident at the corner of Reimer Avenue and Fourth Street. Reinke was arrested Oct. 4.

“I just know that I was very disgusted with myself, sir,” Reinke told Judge Ken Champagne.

The judge, referencing Reinke’s pre-sentence report, noted positively how the man is now reconnecting with family and his church. The report also highlighted past challenges with drug abuse and family relationships.

“That really doesn’t explain your actions,” Champagne said, who noted he appreciated the background in the report but still wondered about this turn of events for a young man with no previous criminal record.

“Twenty-six years old and this comes out of the blue?” he asked.

Reinke was handed an 18-month suspended sentence, as was recommended in a joint submission from the Crown and defence. Among several additional requirements, Reinke will undergo sexual offender programming, substance abuse counselling, and is barred from contacting the complainants in the case. He is also banned from attending public parks, pools or schools, though a provision was made for him to do so for work purposes.
