A celebration 100 years in the making is coming to New Bothwell this weekend.

The New Bothwell Centennial Celebration will celebrate 100 years of New Bothwell with an all-day celebration this Saturday on the grounds of the New Bothwell Rec Centre.

Edna Vogt and her granddaughter Chantelle Dueck have both been working for about a year to plan the celebration, and Vogt knows a thing or two about the history of New Bothwell as she said her family first settled in the community when her great-grandparents began living in New Bothwell.

“Our family has been here since then, and I’ve lived here my entire life,” Vogt, the current president of the New Bothwell Chamber of Commerce, said.

Vogt added that recently when her great-grandson began school at Bothwell School that marked the fifth generation of her family to begin attending school in New Bothwell.

Vogt said the centrepiece of this weekend’s celebration will be the official unveiling of a centennial mural that is being painted on the side of the New Bothwell Rec Centre and features a number of images that celebrate the history of the community.

“The mural is a big thing for the centennial, that was a really big project and also supposed to tell a story about the hundred years,” Vogt said.

Along with the mural unveiling which will take place at 4 p.m. at the Rec Centre, the centennial celebration will also feature a day full of activities including a free pancake breakfast, kids’ activities and a scavenger hunt, painting sessions, live musical performances, and a performance by stand-up comedian Big Daddy Tazz.

“Our aim was to offer something for every age group,” Vogt said.

The celebration should end with a bang as a fireworks show is set to take place starting at 10:45 p.m. on Saturday.

Dueck said people should expect quite a show when the fireworks get underway.

“We’ve really gone above and beyond for the fireworks,” Dueck said. “It’s going to be a real big show.”

The event will also celebrate the history of New Bothwell with a full historical display that will feature items like historic photos and newspaper clippings from the past.

Vogt said she also expects the event to have a “reunion feel” as she said she has heard from former New Bothwell residents now living in Ontario and even in B.C. that have told her they will be coming back to New Bothwell this weekend to help celebrate the anniversary.
