Niverville council voted this week to put more than $100,000 into a project that would see an outdoor hockey rink built in town, and parking lot lighting upgraded at the spot where the rink will sit.

During a council meeting in Niverville on Tuesday council voted to award a contract to Armada Construction of Niverville to build the brand new outdoor rink that will sit on the east side of Niverville Arena, with the cost to build the rink coming in at just over $79,000.

“We’ve been talking now for a number of years about doing something a bit more permanent in the form of an outdoor hockey-style rink,” Niverville mayor Myron Dyck said after Tuesday’s council meeting.

“We have had various skating areas in the past, but we’ve never had anything outdoors with boards, and this is something the community has been asking for.”

In a separate vote on Tuesday council also voted to spend an additional $25,000 on the outdoor rink project for what they said was arena parking lot lighting, stating they needed to do some upgrades to the light standards and move some of the lighting so it can be used for parking for both the indoor and outdoor rinks that will sit adjacent to one another.

Dyck said they did not yet have a timeline of when the rink project is expected to be completed.
