Representatives from the Pat Porter Active Living Centre visited Steinbach city council on Tuesday, asking for support with funding stage upgrades at the Chrysler Gate venue.
Pat Porter Centre president Doug Enns told council the centre needs $21,000 to complete stage and sound system improvements.
He shared that the need for the stage replacement was discovered in February, when a small fire broke out while work was being done to replace stage lighting.
Upgrades are necessary, Enns maintained, to remain competitive with other venues. Rentals account for $95,000 of the centre’s annual income.
Mayor Earl Funk said council would discuss the request at its study session talks in July.
The mayor has favoured capital projects applications previously, including during last year’s election campaign.
"For organizations we don’t want to see the City of Steinbach give operating grants. We’d like to capital programs that actually build assets and help organizations give better service to the community," Funk said.
A decade ago the centre received a regular annual grant of about $10,000 from the city, an arrangement that became viewed as a grant in lieu of taxes but from one-time request for city funding towards a parking lot paving project.
Funk said funding for this project, if approved, would be available as part of next year’s budget.
