Seine River School Division administrators were tasked Tuesday with reviewing schoolyard play structures throughout the division to determine whether accessibility upgrades are needed.

Trustee Jessie Cahill broached the issue after noticing the pea gravel surrounding some outdoor play structures prevents students with mobility aids from accessing them.

“There shouldn’t be any barriers for any child,” she said.

The division could draft a new policy to gradually replace the gravel with shock-absorbing all-weather matting, she suggested.

Trustees unanimously supported a motion to have administrators review the division’s playgrounds to see where mats were already employed, and examine potential sources of funding. No timeline was attached to the review.

Superintendent Mike Borgfjord later said playground improvements traditionally fall to schools and parent advisory committees, with the division providing grant funding and maintenance.
