A local musician and choir director is asking singers of all ages and skill levels to come forward, as he looks to put together a choir made up of hundreds of singers.

Danny Plett is worship pastor at Steinbach’s Emmanuel Evangelical Free Church.

Plett is now looking to put together the Great Hallelujah Choir, a choir he hopes will feature approximately 200 singers, rehearse this winter and then put on performances in March.

“We’re just working to get the word out now because the first rehearsal is coming up in January,” Plett said.

Plett added the rehearsals and performances would feature an urban gospel style of music, which he said is a fun genre of music to perform.

“The rhythms are very engaging and very fun because it’s in that urban gospel style,” Plett said.

Although some may feel intimidated about the idea of joining a choir and singing in front of a crowd, Plett said he is looking for all skill levels to join and that no one should feel shy about giving singing in the choir a shot.

“There is no musical ability requirement, there is no age requirement, it’s simply put out there for everybody,” Plett said. “And I find some come in a little intimidated at first, but pretty quickly they realize they love it.

“And the reason they love it is because it creates a sense of community because you’re getting together and making friends with the people you are singing with.”

After recruiting singers Plett plans to hold rehearsals on Jan. 13, Feb. 10, and March 3 and then hold a dress rehearsal on March 7.

The Great Hallelujah Choir will perform at Emmanuel Evangelical Free Church on March 8 and 9, and then perform on March 10 as the finale to the church’s worship service that day.

Plett said he has seen from choirs he has directed in the past that once singers put on a performance, they often walk off the stage excited about what they have just accomplished.

“After they perform they are pumped because it’s a celebration,” Plett said.

Plett says anyone who would like to sign up for or get more information on the Great Hallelujah Choir can visit eefc.ca/greathallelujah.
