Seine River School Division trustees voted last week to purchase transportation software intended to work in harmony with GPS technology already installed in its bus fleet.

Funded a divisional surplus, the new software carries an estimated setup cost of $14,000 along with a $14,000 annual licensing fee, said superintendent Michael Borgfjord.

Paul Ilchena, SRSD’s secretary treasurer, said installation should be completed by September.

The software is expected to allow the division’s transportation department to seamlessly integrate student information and bus route information databases, and optimize the efficiency of new and existing bus routes using mapping technology.

Borgfjord said the software will also reduce the amount of communication needed between the transportation department and individual schools by automating service and information requests, such as those needed to arrange buses for field trips.
