Two people were transported to hospital on Thursday morning after a collision between a SUV and semi in the RM of Piney.

Sprague RCMP responded to a report of the crash around 8 a.m.

Investigation determined that the SUV rear ended the semi while travelling on Highway 12 near Road 73E, about five kilometres west of South Junction.

Visibility was a factor due to the recent snowfall, police said.

The SUV’s 20-year-old male driver, a resident of Winnipeg, and 43-year-old female passenger, a RM of Piney resident, suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The 32-year-old male driver of the semi-trailer, an Elma resident, was not injured.

Sprague Deputy Fire Chief Amanda Ruttle told The Carillon that the semi was hauling peat moss and beginning to turn onto Road 73E when the collision occurred.

She added that the passenger in the SUV had to be extricated from the vehicle and that both its occupants were transported to hospital in Roseau, Minnesota.

A spokesperson for STARS said the air ambulance service was stood down after initially being called to the scene.

Update 3:45 p.m.: Adds comments from Sprague deputy fire chief. Adds more detail on location of collision.
