A two-vehicle collision Sunday on the Trans-Canada Highway near Falcon Lake has claimed the lives of two Dryden, Ont. residents.

Falcon Beach RCMP responded around 11:15 a.m. to the crash, which occurred near Barren Lake, about four kilometres east of Falcon Lake in Whiteshell Provincial Park.

In a release Monday, Manitoba RCMP said an initial investigation determined an eastbound vehicle stopped abruptly on the highway, causing the driver of an eastbound semi to steer into the westbound lane in an attempt to avoid rear-ending the vehicle.

The semi then collided with a westbound pickup truck, causing both vehicles to veer off the highway.

Both occupants of the pickup truck, a 54-year-old male driver and his 17-year-old male passenger, were pronounced dead on scene.

The 22-year-old semi driver and his 28-year-old passenger, both from southern Ontario, suffered minor injuries.

A forensic collision reconstructionist continues to assist Falcon Beach RCMP with the investigation.

The Trans-Canada Highway was closed and traffic was rerouted between Falcon Lake and West Hawk Lake for about 12 hours following the crash.
