ABRAM (ABE) PETERS
Sept. 15, 1937-Feb. 5, 2019
Abram (Abe) Peters passed away peacefully at Bethesda Hospital after increasing illness over the last year.
He was predeceased by birth mother Katrina Peters (nee Dyck) in 1937, father Abe J. Peters in 1979, sister Mary Geisel (nee Peters) in 1990 and Mary’s husband Cliff Geisel in 1975.
Left to mourn are his wife Chris Peters (nee Toews), daughter Rose (Trevor), son Jason, mother Mary Peters, sister Jesse (Stephen), brothers Fred (Helen) and Jim (Karen), and many nieces and nephews.
Abe met and married Chris (aka Justina) Toews in 1966; they were married 53 years.
Abe worked at various jobs to pay for his education. After Teachers College he taught in a number of rural schools. In 1961, he returned to school at the University of Manitoba. Between semesters he again worked, this time at INCO up north. In 1965, he moved to Steinbach to teach in the high school. Abe was passionate about teaching and he liked to talk, so most of us who loved him received a lesson from him at some point! In 1994, he received a diagnosis of heart disease and was advised to stay home and wait for triple bypass surgery. Because he rarely took a sick day, he received a year off with pay before retiring in 1996. His teaching career spanned more than 35 years.
Abe also loved music and had a large number of instruments. Over the years, he played with a variety of musical groups such as the Harmonica Band, the senior orchestra, and provided musical contributions at church and other events. He was actively involved with the church’s Bible camp (FBBC) and the museum in Steinbach.
Most of all, Abe was a man who valued his relationship with God, his family, friends, colleagues and students. A fracture in any of those relationships would hurt him deeply. He was loved and greatly respected in Steinbach and in the wider community.
Rest in peace, Abe. Auf wiedersehen.
Family services with burial were held earlier.
