‘It was just our time,’ — St Malo Warriors win 1st CRJHL championship

Cassidy Dankochik 4 minute read Monday, Apr. 15, 2024

For the first time since 2009, the St Malo Warriors junior B club has ended the season as league champions.

The team didn’t make it look easy, falling behind 2-0 in the league finals against the Beausejour Comets, but were able to storm back to win four consecutive games to win the trophy, including a 4-1 game six victory in Beausejour April 5 to clinch the Capital Region Junior Hockey League (CRJHL) championship.

St Malo head coach and general manager Ralph Collette said at the beginning of the season he wanted to make the Warriors’ 30th anniversary a memorable one, and in the chaos of post-game celebrations, he reflected on the championship season.

“It’s been a long year, that’s for sure,” Collette said.

AS I SEE IT: Jets let down their faithful yet again

James Loewen 4 minute read Sunday, May. 5, 2024

In a script that’s all too familiar in this province, the Jets have once again been unceremoniously eliminated in the opening round of the NHL playoffs. Some thoughts:

After last year’s playoff debacle the Jets shipped off hard-working Blake Wheeler. Winnipeg went on to have one of their best seasons ever, finishing as the best defensive team in the NHL. The hope was that whatever toxicity used to be in the Jets dressing room was now gone, freeing up the players to play to their true ability. But this year’s disappointing playoff version of the Jets looks almost as woeful as last year’s version. To their credit Winnipeg worked hard and played like they cared in game 5 against Colorado, but it was way too little, way too late. That sound you hear is Blake Wheeler laughing.

As the playoffs approached much was made of an unnamed NHLer calling the Jets “frauds” on a popular podcast. The anonymous player said the Jets regular season success wasn’t real and that the team would be quickly eliminated in the opening round. Ouch. The truth hurts.

Expect our rental players (Tyler Tofolli and Sean Monahan) to get out of Dodge as fast as possible. Had the Jets made a deep playoff run, they may have wanted to stick around but after seeing the team’s total collapse at the absolute worst time of the year, they will leave and the idea of an ominous cloud hanging over this franchise come playoff time, will only get stronger. They had zero impact in the playoffs so it won’t be difficult to see them go.

Raygan Kirk has turned into a superstar on and off the ice.

Not only did the Ste Anne goaltender backstop the Ohio State Buckeyes to a national championship, posting a shutout in her final collegiate game, she has also been named as a distinguished senior at the university’s college of food agricultural and environmental sciences.

“That was super awesome to get nominated for that,” Kirk said.

“It’s outside of your sport, it’s about what you were doing in the classroom and in the community.”

Eric Loeppky’s club volleyball season came to an end April 28, as Mint Vero Volley Monza fell in the fourth match of the Italian Superlega finals.

The favoured Perugia were able to claim the title, winning game four and the best-of-five series 3-1.

Despite the loss, Monza played the role of underdog well throughout the finals, pushing Perugia to the limit in what will go down as the club’s best season in history.

Even in the decisive game of the finals, Vero Volley didn’t go down quietly, taking the first set, and scoring 23 and 25 points in their subsequent losses.

SPORTS FLASHBACK 1967: Grunthal’s Ken Block traded to Maple Leafs

Wes Keating 3 minute read Saturday, May. 4, 2024

The National Hockey League expansion draft is now history. To the hockey fan who expected some name players to switch clubs, the expansion proceedings were somewhat of a disappointment. But that was not the case for Grunthal native Ken Block, as the draft provided him with what could be the crowning point of his hockey career — a chance to play in the NHL.

At the same time, Block played a prominent role in what turned out to be the single biggest story of the week-long NHL meetings.

Drafted by the Los Angeles Kings, the 23-year-old defenseman appeared headed for the new west coast club. Two days later, Block was traded to Toronto for Maple Leaf veteran Red Kelly.

After the Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup in 1967, Red Kelly announced his retirement as a player and negotiated with the expansion Los Angeles to be their inaugural coach on the strength of Punch Imlach’s statement that he would not stand in the way of Kelly’s coaching career.

For the first time in over two decades, the Hanover Soccer Club will not be led by Norm Anderson.

Anderson, who helped found the club in the early 2000s, is stepping down from his role as chair of the Hanover Soccer Club board, handing the reigns to Brian Froese.

Froese is a good choice for the role, being involved as a coach, player, volunteer and board member throughout nearly the entire club’s existence, but said he needed to be convinced to sign up, noting he expected to leave the program after his kids stopped playing soccer.

“I felt I sort of did my duty, and walked away and had no intention of ever coming back,” Froese said, laughing.

Steinbach Pistons fall to Winkler Flyers in MJHL finals

Cassidy Dankochik 8 minute read Thursday, May. 2, 2024

In the end, the 2024 Manitoba Junior Hockey League finals will go down as a 4-0 sweep for the Winkler Flyers, but it didn’t feel that way in the moment.

The Flyers needed two overtime wins to complete the sweep over the Steinbach Pistons, including a 5-4 victory in game four in front of a raucous crowd of 1,300 at the Centennial Arena in Winkler April 26. The victory gave Winkler their first MJHL championship since 1998.

“It was a series that wasn’t the best hockey if I’m going to be honest,” Winkler head coach and general manager Justin Falk said after the game.

“It was a bit sloppy, we were a bit nervous knowing the situation we were in. I (would have) liked our execution to be a bit better. But we found a way to be resilient, we found a way to be desperate enough to find a way through each moment.”

More than 150,000 people attended Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) games this season, as Steinbach’s spot as the most-well attended franchise took a step back this year.

With their new rink still under construction, the Steinbach Pistons played games inside La Broquerie’s HyLife Centre, averaging 563 fans per game this season. That total ranks them sixth in the league, according to game-by-game attendance figures recorded on the league’s website.

Steinbach’s sales/marketing manager Jamie Roy said the club had a good year in La Broquerie, selling every seat in the stands for every game. The HyLife Centre only seats 379 in the bleachers, compared to the 865 in the T.G. Smith Centre’s now demolished Centennial Arena.

“(We’re) certainly looking forward to moving into the the new events centre and being able to offer fans 2,400 actual seats with backrests,” Roy said.

Not because there was doubt she deserved entry but because she kept ignoring the call from officials to let her know she was part of the class of 2024.

The Town of Morris played host to some 400 curlers during the third week of January, when 64 men’s rinks and 36 ladies’ rinks vied for prizes in a huge bonspiel there. Foursomes came from the surrounding districts of Sanford, Sperling, Ridgeville, and Dominion City; from Winnipeg and from even as far away as Bemidji, Minnesota to compete.

The games were played on two ice surfaces in Morris, giving organizers a total of eight sheets of ice, for draws in four events on the men’s side and two ladies’ event. Visiting curlers complimented the Morris Curling Club for the efficient way in which the bonspiel was conducted. Lunch and refreshments were available continually at the skating rink, for the 400 hungry and thirsty curlers and their fans between games. Winners and runners-up in the six events were awarded prizes donated by local merchants and the Town of Morris.

A Sperling rink skipped by M. Gehring consisting of L.A. Rose, second, A. Pederson, third and E. Bilodeau, lead won the first event and walked away with radios donated by the Town of Morris.

The second event winners, a Sanford rink, was skipped by Clarence Rogers, with Lindsay MacDonald at third; second Barton McDole, and lead Cecil McDonald. They were presented table lamps donated by the Pool Elevator Association of Morris.

James Loewen 4 minute read Saturday, Apr. 27, 2024

Editor's note: This column was first published in the April 25 edition of The Carillon

By the time you see this the Winnipeg Jets will either have a formidable two games to zero advantage over the Colorado Avalanche, or the series will be tied at a game a piece with the Avs having the momentum as the series shifts to Denver.

Whatever success the Jets will enjoy – either in this series or in any others – will depend largely on the quality of goaltending they get. Of course the defensive structure in front of the net and eliminating the opposition from getting too many scoring opportunities to score will be important, as will our ability to score enough goals.

But the team will live or die primarily on the strength (or weakness) of their netminder.

Steinbach Pistons swept out of MJHL finals by Winkler

The Steinbach Pistons' season came to a shocking end April 26, as the Winkler Flyers completed a finals sweep, winning their first Manitoba Junior Hockey League Championship since 1998.

Winkler scored five minutes into overtime to clinch the title, after Spencer Penner and David Cote took minor penalties, leaving Steinbach two men down for well over a minute.

Zach Nicolas would be the hero, taking advantage of the extra space near the Pistons net and knocking home a loose puck, setting off jubilant celebrations inside the Centennial Arena in Winkler with the final score reading 5-4 for the home team.

Steinbach put together their best period of the entire finals, scoring twice in the third period to force overtime, including a Parker Jasper one-timer marker with 30 seconds left.
