The Ste. Anne Aces won their third straight Carillon Senior Hockey League title Sunday afternoon at a packed Ste. Anne Arena, winning in the most of dramatic of fashions.
Scoreless through the first 60 riveting minutes of regulation time, Tanner Harms ended it just 58 seconds into overtime as the Aces beat the Grunthal Red Wings 1-0 in a memorable thriller.
Ste. Anne won the best of seven series 4-2. Grunthal forced game six with a 7-6 overtime victory at home on Thursday.
But the goal scoring dried up in Sunday’s game as Guy St. Vincent for the Aces and Caden Unger for the Red Wings waged a tremendous goaltending battle. St. Vincent made 40 saves to post the shutout while Unger made 33 stops for the Wings.
Aces forward Keith Grondin was named playoff MVP. Grondin, who assisted on the winner from Harms, along with Brennan Ritchie, led all playoff scorers with nine goals and 18 points in 11 games.
