Both squads finished third at their respective tournaments, with the 13U qualifier at Ile des Chenes and the 15U qualifier at Altona.

Each of these tournaments had eight rural teams competing, with six teams qualifying for the upcoming provincial championships in Winnipeg as three Winnipeg teams and the host team will round out the 10-team fields of the 13U and 15U ‘AAA’ provincial championships, which will both be held at Optimist Park in Winnipeg Aug. 2-4.

At Ile des Chenes, the Sultans rolled through the round robin with three decisive victories, crushing Brandon 23-2, defeated Interlake 14-2 and then stopped Midwest by a 13-3 score.

The Sultans then lost 5-0 to Oildome in their first playoff game, before coming back to blank Midwest 10-0 in the #3 vs. #4 game. Oildome finished first overall, defeating South Central 17-13 in the final game.

At Altona, the Sultans finished with a 2-1 round robin record as they opened the tournament with a 4-0 victory over Brandon and also shutout Interlake 10-0, before losing 8-3 to Midwest.

The Sultans then defeated Oildome 5-1 in the 3# vs. #4 game. South Central finished first overall, defeating Midwest 9-1 in the final.

Meanwhile, the Carillon Sultans also competed in the Provincial 18U ‘AA’ championships at Morden. The Carillon team, which is a regional squad, is considered a developmental team of sorts and as such did not have any ‘AAA’ players on their team, unlike most of the other teams competing in the 12-team tourney.

Although the Sultans lost all three of their games, they were very competitive as they were edged 8-7 by Hamiota, lost 3-1 to Boissevain and then lost another one run game, 4-3 to North Winnipeg. Portage defeated Altona 6-4 in the championship game.

Coming up this weekend at La Broquerie and Steinbach will be the 13U and 15U Prospect Showcase, which will include developmental teams from the province.
