A few local gymnasts will be holding their heads high after returning from a very successful run at a recent national gymnastics tournament in Ontario.

Several members of Steinbach-based Flippers Gymnastics recently competed at the 2019 Canadian Championships in Trampoline Gymnastics in Oshawa, which took place July 24-28.

Flippers head coach Amanda Pierson said the local gymnasts who took part in the tournament exceeded even her expectations.

“I cried when it was all over, I was just overwhelmed with how well everything went,” Pierson said.  “These guys worked really hard and we don’t always have the level of equipment that some of the other teams have, so to do what we did with what we were working with was really amazing.

“I could not be more proud of these guys.”

Flippers gymnast Pierce Barlow had a very successful tournament as he walked away with a gold medal in his category for tumbling.

“That’s an amazing result because it was his first time tumbling at Nationals, and he got first place,” Pierson said. “He was thrilled with that and he worked really, really hard this year.

“Two years ago he wasn’t tumbling at all and I convinced him to do it last year and he started out having a lot of struggles with it, so to watch him learn this quickly and leave with a gold medal is just awesome.”

Another gymnast who had a successful run at this year’s nationals was Isaiah Klassen who took 5th place on double-mini in the junior category and also took 4th place in both trampoline and tumbling.

“That is the highest we have ever had an athlete place for double-mini,” Pierson said. “Things went really, really well for him. We were hoping he would make top 10 and he placed 5th which was pretty awesome for him.

“He exceeded our expectations big time.”

Pierson added Klassen put on what she called a “stellar” performance at the tournament and was one of very few athletes who competed in trampoline, tumbling and double-mini.

“There are not a lot of athletes that did all three and he just nailed every routine that he did,” she said.

Pierson said the success of the athletes at the tournaments is all-the-more impressive considering how hard they work throughout the year.

“National’s kids train 14 hours a week with me in the gym and do another three hours of weight training, so it’s a lot of work and sacrifice so to see this success come out of it is awesome.”
