JV Sabres winners in WHSFL debut

The SRSS JV Sabres were victorious in their first ever game Wednesday at Brandon in the Winnipeg High School Football Junior Varsity League.

Never trailing in the game, the SRSS defeated the Crocus Plains Plainsmen 32-24.

The Sabres got out to an early 10-0 lead on a touchdown pass from Austin Dueck to Nathans Edwards-Schure and a Teg Peters field goal.

After Crocus Plains narrowed the SRSS lead to 10-8 the Sabres responded with three consecutive touchdowns, including a strike from Austin Dueck to Teg Peters and a pair of rushing TD’s by Avery Penner and Austin Dueck.

Crocus Plains scored two late touchdowns but the Sabres hung on for the 32-24 victory.

The Sabres were also strong on the defensive side of the ball, which included quarterback sacks by Reece Knelsen and Keagan Sawatzky.

SRSS will return home next week as they play host to the Sisler Spartans Wedneday, Sept. 20 at 5:00 p.m. at A.D. Penner Park.

Meanwhile, the SRSS Varsity Sabres return to action today (Thursday) as they entertain the Sisler Spartans at 5:00 p.m. at A.D. Penner Park. The Sabres lost 15-6 to Dakota in their season opener last week.
