It was a long road trip for the Steinbach Pistons on the weekend, but worth the trip as it were, as the Pistons swept a pair of games at Swan Valley and OCN.

Opening the weekend set with a 3-0 victory over the Swan Valley Stampeders Friday at Swan River, the Pistons followed that with a 4-1 triumph Saturday night over the Blizzard at OCN.

With the two victories, the Pistons, now 33-8-1-1, maintain their commanding 11-point lead over the second place Portage Terriers atop the Manitoba Junior Hockey League standings. However, the Terriers have two games in hand on the Pistons.

In Friday’s game, Matt Radomsky posted his league-leading sixth shutout of the season, making 29 saves, to backstop the Pistons to victory.

The line of Bradley Schoonbaert, Drew Worrad and Austin Heidemann were deadly again as they took care of all the scoring. Schoonbaert had two goals and an assist, Worrad a goal and two assists and Heidemann picked up two helpers.

Saturday at OCN, it was Matthew Thiessen’s turn between the pipes as the MJHL’s top goaltender lowered his goals against average to 2.05, making 27 saves in the 4-1 win over the Blizzard, who outshot the Pistons 28-26.

Thiessen lost his bid for a shutout when Trygve Many Guns scored OCN’s lone goal with 4:22 remaining in the game.

Tyson McConnell with his 16th of the season, Darby Gula his 11th, Will Koop his 18th and Bradley Schoonbaert his 28th, were the Steinbach goal scorers.

Meanwhile, Dexter Kuczek of the Winnipeg Blues passed Schoonbaert on the weekend to take over top spot in the MJHL scoring race. Kuczek now has 66 points, just a point ahead of Schoonbaert. The Pistons’ Braden Purtill is third with 56 points.

Thirteen members of the Pistons, along with head coach Paul Dyck are in Regina today and tomorrow for the MJHL/SJHL Showcase.

The Pistons return to action Saturday night at Neepawa as they take on the Natives at 7:30 p.m. at the Yellowhead Centre.
