Mudbugs, Hawks, Comets winners on opening weekend

The Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League kicked off another season this weekend with three games being played, and all were decided by a single goal.

On opening night Friday in Steinbach, the defending champion Red River Mudbugs picked up where they left off last season as they edged the Huskies 5-4.

Skylar Klassen paced the Mudbugs with a pair of goals. Bailey Funk made 39 saves in the Steinbach net in a losing cause.

Also Friday at Grunthal, the St. Adolphe Hawks defeated the Red Wings 6-5 in overtime, on the winner from Ashton Meilleur on the powerplay two minutes into the extra session, with his second of the game.

Rick Lesage had a goal and three assists for the winning Hawks. Jared Hunter had two goals and an assist for the Red Wings.

Saturday at Oakbank, the visting Lorette Comets edged the Springfield Xtreme 3-2 in a penalty-filled affair as the Comets received goals from Kaan Bitchok, Liam Grossman and William Gladu.

HTJHL play resumes Wednesday night at Grunthal as the Red Wings host the Lorette Comets at 8:00 p.m.
