The Carillon Pee Wee ‘AAA’ Sultans have qualified for the Western Canadian Championships thanks to their runner-up finish at the Provincial 13U AAA Baseball Championships in Winnipeg during the August long weekend.

Carillon will now join North Winnipeg as Manitoba reps at the Western Canada 13U Championships, Aug. 18-20 at Spruce Grove, Alberta.

The Sultans lost their first game of the round, 10-3 to Brandon, then reeled off four straight victories, before eventually being stopped 6-2 by North Winnipeg in the provincial final. Ironcially, it was Carillon that handed North Winnipeg their only loss of the tournament and that came in the final round robin game as the Sultans were 7-6 winners.

In their other round robin games the Sultans trounced host St. James 13-3 and blasted Parkland 14-4, before sidelining Boni-vital 9-4 in the semis.

Meanwhile, at the Bantam ‘AAA’ provincial championships at Morden, Carillon came up just one game short in their quest to qualify for westerns as the Sultans lost 14-1 to Winnipeg South in the semi-finals. Winnipeg South went on to win the provincial title as they doubled North Winnipeg 8-4 in the final.

The Sultans had a rocky start to the tournament, losing their first two games before bouncing back to win their next two to qualify for the playoffs.

Coming up this weekend at Ile des Chenes are the Western Canadian Midget 18U AAA Baseball Championships, August 10-13. Two games will also be played in Steinbach on  Friday.
