Pistons blank Blues, finals within grasp

The Steinbach Pistons delivered a clutch 3-0 victory over the Winnipeg Blues Saturday night in Steinbach to a take a 3-2 lead in their Manitoba Junior Hockey League semi-final series.

Steinbach can advance to the MJHL finals with a victory in game six tonight at Bell MTS Iceplex.

Matthew Thiessen was the author of last night’s game five victory making 31 saves to post the shutout as the Pistons outshot the Blues 40-31. Thiessen has incredible numbers in net for the Pistons in this post-season. In seven games played he leads with three shutouts, a 1.29 goals against average and a .951 save percentage.

Scoreless after the first last night in Steinbach, Easton Bennett scored what proved to be the winning goal for the Pistons four minutes into the second. Mark Taraschuk and Braden Purtill added a pair of third period markers.

Game time tonight (Sunday) at the Iceplex is 6:30 p.m. Should a seventh and deciding game be required, it will be played Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Steinbach.

Awaiting the winner of this series is the Virden Oil Capitals, who swept the Winkler Flyers four straight in the other semi-final series.
