The defending MJHL champion Steinbach Pistons, with their pre-season schedule now completed, will spend the week in practice preparing for their regular season opener Friday night in Steinbach.

With a weekend home-and-home sweep of the Selkirk Steelers by scores of 3-0 and 4-1, the Pistons had a 5-1 record in six pre-season games and appear well prepared and poised to begin the defence of their MJHL crown.

Friday night in Steinbach, Matt Lenz and Matthew Radomsky, rarely tested, combined to make 16 saves in the Pistons’ 3-0 triumph at home. Brendan Westbrook, Andrew Warhoftig and Tyson McConnell were the Steinbach goal scorers. Defenceman Troy Williams picked up two assists on the night as the Pistons dominated, outshooting the Steelers 51-16.

Saturday in Selkirk, veteran forward Will Koop, who missed much of last year’s playoffs with an injury, showed he’s ready to go for the current campaign as he scored three times and set up a fourth by Brady Tatro.

Matt Radomsky went the distance in net for the Pistons stopping 30 of the 31 shots he faced as the Pistons outshot the Steelers 39-31.

Steinbach’s only pre-season loss was a 2-1 setback at the hands of the Winnipeg Blues, but it was a game in which the Pistons outshot the Blues 36-16.

Despite their lone loss, the Pistons outscored their opponents 26-13 in the six pre-season games and outshot them by a whopping margin of 233-129.

Game time at the T.G. Smith Centre Friday night is 7:30 p.m. as the Pistons will host the Waywayseecappo Wolverines in the MJHL season opener.
