The Steinbach Pistons edged the Winkler Flyers 4-3 in a Manitoba Junior Hockey League Louis Riel Day match-up Monday afternoon in Steinbach.

Scoreleess through the first half of the game, Will Koop broke open the scoreless contest for the Pistons midway through the second. Steinbach would take a 3-0 lead into the third as Drew Worrad and Bradley Schoonbaert also scored in the middle period.

The Pistons withstood a Winkler rally in the third as the visitors outscored the Pistons 3-1 in the final frame, including two on the powerplay as the Pistons hung on for a 4-3 victory in the entertaining late-season game. Riese Gaber, with his 24th of the season, scored for the Pistons in third.

Matthew Thiessen picked up the win in net for the Pistons, who outshot the Flyers 35-21 in the contest.

Schoonbaert had a goal and an assist for the Pistons as he widened his lead in the MJHL scoring race as he now has 35 goals and 87 points on the season and a five-point lead on Dexter Kuczek of the Winnipeg Blues.

The Pistons, who have already clinched first place in the loop, improved their record to 44-8-2-1 and have five games remaining in the regular season.

Next up for the Pistons will be a road game this Wednesday as they take on the Winnipeg Blues at 7:00 p.m. at Bell MTS Iceplex.
