Winners of back-to-back pennants the past two seasons as the first place team and top point getter in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, shockingly, the defending champion Steinbach Pistons find themselves in last place following the opening weekend of the play in the MJHL.

A pair of one goal losses over the weekend, 3-2 to last year’s cellar dwelling Waywayseecappo Wolverines in the season opener Friday in Steinbach and then 2-1 to the Selkirk Steelers Saturday at Selkirk, have left the Pistons with a surprising 0-2 record, tied at the bottom with the OCN Blizzard.

The Wolverines, after their major upset of the of the Pistons on Friday, kept the foot on the gas Sunday night at home as they throttled the Selkirk Steelers 6-1 and now are one of four teams with 2-0 records, along with the Dauphin Kings, Swan Valley Stampeders and Winkler Flyers.

The Pistons lost a lot of firepower from last year’s celebrated club as they scored only three times in two games on the weekend. But, as they say, it’s still early and they are only four points out of first place.

Hitting the practice ice all week, the Pistons don’t return to action until Friday night when they travel to Winkler to take on the Flyers and then return home to host the Swan Valley Stampeders Saturday night at the T.G. Smith Centre.
