We have mentioned this on several occasions already, but it bears repeating.

When the defending champion Steinbach Pistons shockingly lost their first two games of this MJHL season, it left them in last place after the opening weekend of play.

Now, just four weeks later, following a steady rise up the standings, the Pistons are back into first place following their 5-1 victory over the Portage Terriers Wednesday night in Steinbach.

Being in first place is familiar territory for the Pistons. That is where the Pistons set up camp the previous two seasons on their way to winning two straight MJHL pennants.

Last night’s victory over the Terriers pushed the Pistons record to 10-4-1-0, one point ahead of the Terriers (10-4-0-0). The Pistons have now beaten the Terriers in all three of their meetings this season.

Portage opened the scoring in last night’s game as Jacob Brown beat Matt Radomsky with just 53 seconds remaining in the opening period. But Brady Tatro, the leading scorer in the MJHL, quickly answered back as he tied it for the Pistons just 19 seconds later.

The Pistons put the game away with three unanswered goals in the third.

Tatro had a goal and two assists in the game, as he now leads the league in scoring with 23 points in 15 games, three points ahead of teammate Brendan Martin, who scored his league-leading 11th goal of the season last night.

Tanner Mole with a pair and a single from Boedey Vaeth rounded out the scoring for the Pistons in last night’s game. Tristan Culleton and Tyson McConnell each picked up two assists on the night.

The Pistons outshot the Terriers 43-25 as Radomsky lowered his goals against average this season to 1.84.

These two longtime rivals will meet again Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Portage, and first place will again be on the line.
