For the second straight night Saturday at the Bell MTS Iceplex, in the second leg of a home-and-home series, the Steinbach Pistons staged a third period rally to defeat the Winnipeg Blues 6-4.

Friday night in Steinbach, trailing 2-0, the Pistons scored three third period markers to close out a 3-2 victory.

It was much of the same in the rematch Saturday at the Iceplex, as the Blues built up a 3-0 lead early in the second, only to see the Pistons battle back, finishing off the Blues with four unanswered goals in the third, as the Pistons have now moved into sole possession of first place in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League standings with an 8-2 record.

Friday at home, Austin Heidemann scored the winner with just over six minutes remaining in regulation. Drew Anderson and Mark Taraschuk scored the earlier goals in the period.

Matthew Thiessen was superb in net for the Pistons making 27 saves as the Pistons outshot the Blues 30-29.
In Saturday’s game, Austin Heidemann paced the Pistons two goals and an assist while league scoring leader Bradley Schoonbaert chipped in with a goal and two helpers. Declan Graham, Graham, Tyson McConnell and Mark Taraschuk added singles for the winners while Will Koop and Braden Purtill each picked up two assists.

Matt Radomsky picked up the win in net but only stopped 13 of the 17 shots he faced as the Pistons outshot the Blues 36-17.

Schoonbaert leads the scoring race with 10 goals and 21 points in 10 games, one point in front of Selkirk’s Connor Barley. Purtill is fourth with 15 points.

The Pistons next see action Wednesday night in Steinbach as they host the Portage Terriers at 7:30 p.m. at the T.G. Smith Centre.
