The Steinbach Pistons have had better weeks.

For for the first time in many weeks, the Pistons have dropped out of first place in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League standings after losing for the third straight time last night.

A 6-3 loss to the Winkler Flyers Friday night in Winkler saw the Flyers (17-6-0) move one point past the Pistons (16-5-1) into top spot in the loop. The Pistons still have a game in hand on the Flyers.

Winkler also beat the Pistons 3-2 in overtime Tuesday in Steinbach and then the Portage Terriers blanked the Pistons 3-0 on Wednesday.

In last night’s game in Winkler, it was the Pistons that opened the scoring with five minutes left in the opening frame as defenceman Darb Gula scored on the powerplay.

But the Flyers tied it a couple of minutes later, then scored three unanswered in the second. Scoring five straight goals, Winkler took a commanding 5-1 lead early in the third. Six different players scored the Winkler goals.

Austin Heidemann and Tyson McConnell, both with their 10th of the season, scored third period goals for the Pistons.

The Pistons outshot the Flyers 38-30 and for the second time this week, Troy Martyniuk, made 35 saves to beat the Pistons.

Three other MJHL games on Friday saw Winnipeg defeat Wayway 5-1, Neepawa got by Selkirk 5-4 in a shootout and Portage blanked Dauphin 3-0.

The Pistons will try to get on back track Sunday night in Portage in a re-match against the Terriers in a 6:30 p.m. puck drop.
