In one of the most entertaining high school games played in Steinbach for quite some time, the SRSS Sabres lost a close 28-25 decision to the Sisler Spartans in WHSFL Potter AAA Division action on Thursday, in a battle between the two largest high schools in Manitoba.

The Sabres never held a lead in this game, but they also turned in a valiant effort in always staying in touch with the Spartans as the Sabres fall to 0-2 in their season in the top Potter Division. Sisler evens their record at 1-1.

Tied 14-14 late in the second quarter, Sisler scored a 30 yard touchdown through the air on the final play of the half to take a 21-14 lead at the break.

Prior to that the teams traded touchdowns as Sisler opened the scoring on an 80-yard run play but the Sabres answered with a spectacular 50-yard strike from young quarterback Sawyer Thiessen to Eric Adams as Adams secured the ball at the goal line, draped in coverage, a play that could make any highlight reel.

Sisler then went up 14-7 on a 45 yard touchdown by the quarterback. But again the Sabres answered and again it was Thiessen to Adams, this time on a 10-yarder.

The teams again traded touchdowns in the second half, and in the end, the Sabres stayed close, losing in a 28-25 final.
Thiessen, only in grade nine, had a strong game at the helm, completing 11 of 20 passes for 146 yards and those two TD’s to Adams, but he also had two picks. He was injured in the third quarter and did not return.

Adams and Tyler Bueckert have become dominant two-way players for the Sabres. In addition to being the teams kicker, returns kicks and playing some pass coverage, he is deadly on offence as he caught five passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns in the game and also ran the ball five times for 32 yards.

Bueckert, named the Potter Division Defensive Player of the Week in week one, had another stalwart game on both sides of the ball as had a sack and five tackles on defence and was a major factor on offence as he lugged the ball five times for 70 yards and hauled in three passes for 52 yards.

Issac Dokken had a standout game on defence for the Sabres with a sack and nine tacles in the contest.

The Sabres have next week off and will next face the Vincent Massey Trojans on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 5:00 p.m. at Vincent Massey.
