The SRSS Sabres take to the field this Thursday morning at Optimist Park in Winnipeg as they begin play in the Provincial High School Boys Baseball Championships.

It is a title that has eluded the Sabres over the years although they came close last year as they dropped an 8-6 decision to Portage Collegiate in the provincial final.

This year the Sabres and the Portage Trojans are again favoured as the Trojans, the two-time defending champions, come in as the number one seed while the Sabres are ranked second.

The Sabres have posted a 13-1 record overall this year in league, tournament and zone play, with their only loss of the season in the finals of the Altona tournament in a 6-3 setback to host W.C. Miller.

SRSS rolled the through the Zone 13 championships last week at Mitchell with four straight victories, throttling Green Valley in the final.

At this weekend’s 12-team provincial championships, the Sabres are in a pool with 11th ranked Prairie Mountain Predators and 5th ranked Lord Selkirk Royals. The Sabres face Prairie Mountain at 9:15 a.m. Thursday morning and then play Selkirk at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday to complete the two-game round robin.

The Sabres edged Lord Selkirk 9-8 in their only meeting this season in an exhibition game on April 25 in their first outing of the season.

Top two teams in each of the four pools advance to Friday’s quarter-finals. Semi-finals will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and the championship game will follow at 1:00 p.m., with all games at Optimist Park.
