The SRSS Sabres lost 3-2 in overtime to the Sanford Sabres Wednesday at Bell MTS Iceplex in the opening game of the Winnipeg High School Hockey League Winnipeg Free Press Division championship series.

These were the top two teams in the division during the season with SRSS finishing first overall and Sanford second.

Scoreless after the first, SRSS took a 2-0 lead in the second on goals by Ethan Plett and Parker Janz.

Sanford tied it with two powerplay goals in the third, with the tying goal coming with four minutes remaining in regulation. Riley Papp scored the winner for Sanford 9:44 into overtime.

SRSS lost to the Springfield Sabres in the finals last year.

Game two in the best of three championships will be played today at 5:00 p.m. at the Iceplex in must win situation for Steinbach.

If SRSS wins today, the deciding game of the finals will be played Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Iceplex.
