Losing in the championship finals the last two years in a row, including a bitterly disappointing loss to the Springfield Sabres in the Division 2 finals last spring, the SRSS Sabres are doing their best to move on as they prepare for the upcoming Winnipeg High School Hockey League season.

Head coach Lawney Penner is again back at the helm of the Sabres along with his assistants Jason Wicklund and John Laninga.

Last year the Sabres finished first overall in the regular season, but lost to the third place Springfield Sabres in the finals.

“Last year’s loss in the finals was a tough pill to swallow for us,” said Penner, “especially in that first game, where we had a 2-0 lead and then lost in overtime.”

But that being said, this is a new team, and there are only seven players returning from last year’s squad. “We are wiping the slate clean,” said Penner, “this will be our youngest team in six years since joining the league.”

Among the returnees, there are three players in grade 12: Mason Martens, Teighan Funk and Sean Banman; and four in grade 11: Darius Morrow, Ethan Plett, Keyan Grimard and Mason Wiebe.

Among the newcomers to the team will be two new goaltenders as both goaltenders from last season have graduated.

Overall the Sabres squad will have five grade 12 players, six in grade 11 and seven in grade 10.

Penner says although being a young team is not the deciding factor in how a team will do, there can be a size difference with the young players.

The SRSS has competed in Division 2 in all of their past seasons. The WHSHL will hold their division alignment meeting next week and Penner says there is a chance the team might move up to Division 1 this season, but it will be determined at the meeting.

The schedule will be determined after that meeting. The Sabres are expected to play their first regular season game the second week of October.
