The Carillon Sultans routed the Interlake Blue Jays 10-0 in five innings Tuesday night in Steinbach to take a 1-0 lead in their Manitoba Junior Basseball League best of three quarter-final series.

Nik Kauenhofen picked up the win on the hill for the Sultans as he threw a complete game two-hit shut-out. He also fanned seven batters along the way while walking a pair.

Noah Vogt was the offensive catalyst for the Sultans as he had three hits, including a huge three-run triple in the fourth that broke the game open, and four RBI on the night. Markus Renaud also had three hits for the Sultans along with two RBI.

Carillon lead-off batter Kaan Bitchok reached base three times and went on to score three runs.

The Sultans scored single runs in the first and third innings and then put the Blue Jays away with four runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings.

Game two in the series will be played tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Stonewall. Should a deciding game be required, it will be played Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Steinbach.

Two other first round series also got underway last night as the Elmwood Giants blanked the St. Boniface Legionaires 3-0, and the Pembina Valley Orioles edged the Altona Bisons 3-2.
