Sultans eliminated from MJBL playoffs

The Carillon Sultans saw their Manitoba Junior Baseball League season come to an end Thursday night in Winnipeg as they lost 7-4 to the St. Boniface Legionaires in the third and deciding game of their MJBL quarter-final series.

After the losing the series opener by an 11-1 count on Tuesday, the Sultans (9-15), sixth place finishers in the loop this season, edged the third place Legionaires (13-11) by a 2-1 score in game two Wednesday night in Steinbach.

The two other quarter-final series also ended last night as Pembine Valley edged St. James 10-9 to sweep their series 2-0; and the last place Interlake Blue Jays upset the second place Altona Bisons, winning the series 2-1, including a 9-8 victory in Thursday’s decisive game.

Meanwhile, there are several Baseball Manitoba qualyfing and provincial championship tournaments on tap this weekend.

Among the tournaments this weekend is the 13U ‘AAA’ Provincial qualifier. There are eight rural teams competing, including the Carillon Sultans, with the top five moving on to the 13U ‘AAA’ Provincial Championship, Aug. 2-4 at Optimist Park In Winnipeg.

The Carillon Sultans, a collection of the top 13U players in the region, under head coach Curt Brandt, will open their tournament today at Ile des Chenes at 5:00 p.m. against Brandon. Then on Saturday the Sultans will complete their round robin with games against Interlake at 12 noon and then Midwest at 6:00 p.m. Playoff games will be Sunday, commencing at 9:00 a.m.
