Optimist Park in Winnipeg will be the site of the 13U and 15U ‘AAA’ provincial baseball championships this weekend and the Carillon Sultans are expected to be in the thick of things in both of these provincial tournaments.

Both Carillon teams qualified for the provincial championships by finishing third at their respective eight-team rural qualifying tournaments and both are expected to be competitive as well at this weekend’s provincial championships, with berths at the western Canadian and national championships on the line.

The Carillon Sultans will play their first game in the eight-team 13U tournament Friday at 3:15 p.m. vs. Pembina Hills and then will complete their round robin on Saturday with games against South Central at 12 noon and then Bonivital at 6:30 p.m.

The top two teams in each pool advance to the playoffs on Sunday, with the championship game slated for 4:00 p.m.

Both the provincial champion and the runner-up will advance to the National and Western Canadian 13U AAA championship, being held Aug. 15-18 at Cloverdale, B.C.

Meanwhile, the 10-team 15U ‘AAA’ championship will be run simultaneously at Optimist Park. The Carillon Sultans will open play Friday at 11:00 a.m. vs. Parkland and will face Winnipeg South at 4:00 p.m. On Saturday the Sultans will go up against South Central at 8:30 a.m. and then Bonivital at 4:00 p.m.

Again, the top two teams in each pool make the playoffs, with the final going at 4:00 p.m. The provincial champion and runner-up will advance to the Western Canadian 15U ‘AAA’ championship, being held Aug. 15-18 at Lloydminster, Sask.

The two Carillon teams competing at provincials this weekend represent the top players from their respective age groups from communities across the Carillon Minor Baseball Association.
