It was completely mystifying how the potent and powerful Steinbach Pistons could lose four games in a row, albeit to two very good teams in Winkler and Portage, and only score six goals in those games.

Well, whatever that was, the Pistons shook it off big time Wednesday night in Steinbach, as their big guns returned in impressive fashion as the Pistons hammered the Winnipeg Blues 10-2.

Ironically, the Blues scored the first goal and the last goal of the game, but in between, in a display of sheer power, the Pistons scored 10 straight goals.

TERRY FREY/ THE CARILLON The Steinbach Pistons snapped a four-game losing streak with an impressive 10-2 victory over the Winnipeg Blues Wednesday night in Steinbach.

The win improved Steinbach’s record to 17-6-1-0, just one point back of the leading OCN Blizzard, who downed the Virden Oil Capitals 5-2 last night. The Pistons also have a game in  hand on the Blizzard.

Winnipeg opened the scoring four minutes into the game on a goal by Dylan Cassie. But Bradley Schoonbaert, the MJHL’s leading scorer, tied it less than a minute a later. The Pistons led 3-1 after the first period, then erupted for six unanswered goals in the second and this game was officially a rout.

Drew Worrad continued his impressive play for the Pistons this season as he had three goals and five points on the night as he now has 30 points on the season in only 15 games, including 13 goals.

Schoonbaert had a goal and three helpers in the game, giving him a league-leading 45 points in 24 games, including 19 goals, which is also tops. He enjoys a six-point advantage over Dexter Kuczek of the Blues, who had a goal and an assist last night.

Braden Purtill had a four-point game on two goals and two assists as he has now risen to third in the scoring race with 37 points. Rounding out the Steinbach scoring last night was Austin Heidemann, Will Koop, Tyson McConnnell and Darby Gula, who had a goal and two assists.

Gula is the highest scoring defenceman in the league and now has 31 points on the season, which is eighth overall in scoring. Kyle Bettens, playing his first game for the Pistons last night, picked up three assists.

The Pistons outshot the Blues 45-25 as Matthew Thiessen picked up the win in net.

Steinbach returns to action with two games in Virden this weekend as they take on the Oil Capitals Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
