Championship banners were unfurled at the Steinbach Pistons’ first game of the season on Friday to celebrate the team’s Turnbull and ANAVET Cup wins, but unfortunately there was no victory for the crowd at the T.G. Smith Centre to enjoy on this night.

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines downed the Pistons by a score of 3-2.

After a scoreless first period, Jack Kennedy notched the first goal of the game for the Wolverines, putting the puck past Pistons netminder Matthew Radomsky. They weren’t finished yet. In the next seven minutes the visitors added two more tallies, putting the Pistons on their heels.

Defenceman Troy Williams finally gave the Pistons faithful something to cheer about as he drove home the team’s first goal of season, assisted by Tyson McConnell and Curtis Ireland. The trio combined for another goal before the end of the second period while on the power play to bring them within one. This time it was the captain, McConnell, who tucked it by Wolverines goalie Isaac Labelle, as Williams and Ireland collected assists.

That was as close as the defending champions would get. As the clock ran out on a scoreless third period, an excited Wolverines bench took to the ice to celebrate their first win of the year and first win over the Pistons since Feb. 7, 2015. Last season, in six meetings against the club, the Pistons outscored the Wolverines 44-5.

Along with their championship banners, a banner honouring the Humboldt Broncos was also hung in the arena before the start of Friday’s game and a 29 second moment of silence was observed for the victims who were killed and injured in the collision on April 6. Players will also wear special decals on their helmets this season to pay tribute to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team.
